The International Classification of Diseases (ICD) is the standard diagnostic tool for epidemiology, health management and clinical purposes. This includes the analysis of the general health situation of population groups. It is used to monitor the incidence and prevalence of diseases and other health problems.
Aetiological diagnosis of STI is problematic in many settings. To overcome this, a syndrome-based approach to the management of STI patients was developed and promoted in a large number of countries in the developing world.

WHO developed a simplified tool (a flowchart or algorithm) to guide health workers in the implementation of syndromic management.
